Descartes is considered as the starting point of the metaphysics of the modern age, which will have its fulfillment in Hegel. He would have overcome by sheer reason the rift between thinking and being, through the idea of a positive infinity. Pascal, on the other hand, would be the anti-modern, because he would be the first to witness the loss of metaphysical thinking. As an alternative to this interpretation, the article highlights the »baroque soul« of both the authors : a more differentiated judgment emerges, capturing both the ›leap‹ in the Cartesian argument and the Pascal ›logic‹. Pascal foretells a critical instance, the full reach of it brought to light only with the late Schelling, Feuerbach, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, prolonging the modernity of Pascal well beyond Hegel himself. | ||
