Description
Summary:Marcion is currently experiencing an unexpected renaissance in both historical and systematic theology. There was a similarly intensive interest in this theologian from Sinope around one hundred years ago, when Adolf Harnack published his now famous work: Marcion. Das Evangelium vom fremden Gott. Yet Hamack's interest in Marcion began many decades earlier. Based on the book from 1921 and the celebrated lecture series Das Wesen des Christentums, this paper will examine both to what extent Marcion influenced Hamack's theology and how Hamack's own ideas may have determined his portrayal of the early Christian heretic. Within this setting the theological relevance of patristic research may be demonstrated.
