Frank published an answer in his book, The Spiritual Foundations of Society: An Introduction to Social Philosophy (Ohio university press, 1987). First appearing in 1930's Paris, Frank's work developed amid the background of a collapsing European society post World War I, and a bloody civil war in his native Russia. Frank's contribution is that of a systematic philosopher, someone seeking to uncover the »true being« of society. This »true being« certainly cannot be deduced from timeless ideas or abstract concepts. Frank's social philosophy that applies the methods of transcendental philosophy and phenomenology is based on a personalist ontology integrated into Christian Neoplatonism. Indirectly, it is a critical dispute with modern individualism and Marxist socialism. Most relevant to contemporary issues are Frank's concept of natural law and innate human rights. Striking similarities can be found in the intention of Frank's and E. Levinas' thinking. Nevertheless, the center of Frank's philosophy – the Godmanhood – for Levinas is unacceptable; in consequence, the encounter with the Other is conceived in a completely different way. | ||
