| 520 | |a Several contemporary philosophers have recently begun to combine a critique of a philosophically well-established reductive naturalism with a new interest in the rationality of religious belief – Holm Tetens, Volker Gerhardt, Jürgen Habermas, Ronald Dworkin and Thomas Nagel are, despite all their differences, united in their rejection of naturalism and their new reception of religious convictions. In this essay, I argue two things: First, there is a structural connection between the rejection of naturalism and the new affinity to religious convictions in the writings of these authors. It is because of the weaknesses of naturalism that these authors turn to a new assessment of the rationality of religious belief. That is why I label them ›postnaturalists‹. Second, theology may learn a lot from this resurfacing of philosophical doctrines of God, as they put into question certain widely shared theological assumptions. I give two examples of the impact of postnaturalist theories on theology: they question the relationship between revelation and reason, and they require a reassessment of the metaphysical status of religious convictions. Thus, contemporary systematic theology would be well-advised to thoroughly scrutinize postnaturalist approaches to religious convictions, while at the same time addressing the challenges they pose for Christian theology. | ||
