Summary: | It is hotly debated whether Christian philosophy is possible – or a contradiction in terms. Is there a way of relating autonomous philosophy with Christian faith that is neither trivial (as when philosophers are merely privately Christians) nor philosophically dubious (as when philosophy draws on revelation)? Section 1 develops this problem and Section 2 discusses the most famous arguments against the possibility of Christian philosophy, by Heidegger, Barth, and Carnap. Section 3 presents a philosophical position that explicitly calls itself »Christian philosophy«, namely Alvin Plantinga's Reformed Epistemology. Section 4 presents and discusses six possible conceptions of »Christian philosophy« that merit further consideration. The paper argues that, if »positional philosophy« is admissible at all, then there is a parity between religion-critical and religion-friendly positions. |
