Description
Summary:Is the emphasis on mercy in the recent papal doctrine only a »trick« in order to avoid changes in church morals and discipline? Does the Church need more justice rather than more mercy? This article raises the question of the biblical metaphorical language of God's mercy and its appropriateness to describe the God of biblical revelation. My proposal is: Through his mercy, God establishes familiarity and intimacy with human beings that cannot be questioned by other aspects by which the Bible describes God in the history of salvation (i. e. God's wrath). In spite of the need to change unjust structures and norms the category of mercy is necessary in the context of unique situations in which we encounter hardship and suffering. The new papal document »Amoris laetitia« invites us to see God's mercy at work in unique pastoral situations of fragile human relationships and human misery.
