AB Voltaire n'est pas à l'origine du concept de laïcité. Il a été plutôt l'un de ceux qui ont réfléchi à la question des rapports des Églises et de l'État, et y voit l'obligation de l'intervention de ce dernier qui doit contrôler la religion afin d'assurer la paix sociale. C'est ainsi qu'il entend se situer entre la tolérance, qui fait place à la diversité religieuse, et la laïcité, dans une position qu'il impose dans l'opinion publique et qui annonce l'accord concordataire de 1802.
AB Voltaire did not invent the concept of secularism. Rather, he was one of those who questioned the relationship between Churches and the State and saw the obligation of the latter to intervene and control religion in order to ensure social harmony. This is how he places himself between tolerance, which leads to religious diversity, and secularity. He would impose his stance on public opinion ; a stance which would announce the French Concordat in 1802.
