| 520 | |a The role and status of widows in early Christianity has seen some growing interest in recent research. This social historical standpoint focuses upon how these female members of an ancient Christian community are presented in early Christian texts. These approaches, however, fall short of grasping the impact of how authors use specific social clichés in order to make their point and nourish general stereotypes of widows. This paper provides a look at the underlying ideas and clichés at play in 1 Tim 5. Scholars tended to perceive this central source for the role of widows in early Church in an artificial contrast to the Greco-Roman environment in which this letter had been produced. In order to overcome this major shortcoming in scholarly perspective, the image of widows as drawn in 1 Tim 5:3-16 is compared with similar stereotypical assertions as prevalent in discourses in a Hellenistic society. A review of Greco-Roman literature (historiography, legislative accounts, comedies and satires) as well as a look into documentary papyri reveals astonishing parallels which add to a more nuanced view on early Christians being embedded in Greco-Roman culture. | ||

Cependant, ces approches peinent à saisir la façon dont les auteurs utilisent des clichés sociaux spécifiques pour montrer leur point de vue et nourrir des stéréotypes généraux sur les veuves. Cet article examine les idées sous-jacentes et les clichés en jeu en 1 Tm 5. Les exégètes avaient tendance à percevoir cette source centrale pour le rôle des veuves dans l'Église primitive dans un contraste artificiel avec l'environnement gréco-romain dans lequel cette lettre avait été produite. Afin de dépasser ce défaut majeur de la perspective exégétique, l'image des veuves esquissée en 1 Tm 5,3-16 est comparée aux affirmations stéréotypées similaires qui dominent les discours de la société hellénistique. Une analyse de la littérature gréco-romaine (historiographie, comptes rendus législatifs, comédies et satires) ainsi qu'un examen des papyri révèlent des parallèles étonnants qui s'ajoutent à un point de vue plus nuancée sur l'intégration des premiers chrétiens dans la culture gréco-romaine. | ||
