His interest in the prayer of petition is manifested in his consideration of how the relationship between what we desire and what God wants for us influences the prayer's efficacy; he additionally reflects on the need to accompany petitions with personal fulfillment of God's law. Maximus conceives the growth in Christian life as a progressive welcoming of grace that fills humanity with Jesus Christ. He provides a commentary on Jesus' prayer during his agony in the garden that emphasizes the Lord's effort to unite his human will with God's will, which also belongs to him, to Jesus as the Word. | ||
