520 | |a This article provides a critical examination of the feminist theological reflections of the Canadian philosopher of religion, Grace Jantzen. It focuses on the arguments of her most important book, Becoming Divine. Many of the criticisms I bring to Jantzen's philosophy have to do with the question of how we predicate "perfection terms" of God, especially when it comes to metaphysical issues. A key problem to which I shall often return is the following: Given that our language is natural and anthropomorphic, how can we speak of God in a way that God is meant per se? How do we make mention of God without assuming that theology is nothing but our speaking-a product of human projection and nothing more? In attending to questions such as these, one simultaneously attends to theology's principal task: the avoidance of idolatry. Throughout this piece, the twin dangers of pragmatism and immanentism are emphasized. I argue that feminist concerns about injustice need not result in the wholesale rejection of metaphysics. Without a strong account of the true, there can be no ultimate obligation to choose the good. | ||
