The starting point for the analysis is the prevalent, as it seems, absence of those affected by profound intellectual disabilities at the celebration of the Eucharist. Drawing from the contemporary Church teaching, the text shows people with intellectual disabilities as full members of the Church, endowed with both an inalienable right, as well as an obligation to partake in the Eucharistic celebration. The Biblical idea of the Church as the Body of Christ, present also in the most recent teaching of the Magisterium, serves as an especially helpful perspective here, highlighting the Church's identity as a community of members bound with one another and having an essential need of one another, who, by sustaining themselves with the Lord's Body, are to grow in their communion both with one another and with Christ. The author also points out a misconception of liturgy and misguided ways of perceiving people with intellectual disabilities, which are largely to be blamed for the affected people's practical exclusion from the most essential aspect of the life of the Church.
