This paper proposes that performative aspects within Isaiah 33 help make sense of its frequent changes of person. The composite nature gives rise to the additional issue of discerning a suitable genre and setting in the scheme of the traditional form-critical study. While accepting W. Beuken's literary genre of 'mirror text' () as an alternative to H. Gunkel's 'prophetic liturgy', I propose the ancient scribal community as its. The performative traits of this literary text can best be explained by the oral-written culture in which ancient scribes access, transmit, and recreate texts. | ||
