On étudie ici les étapes de sa conversion et son itinéraire d'Italie au Proche-Orient, marqué par de nombreux signes et présages, au premier rang desquels se trouvent l'adoption d'un nouveau prénom et la circoncision. Il est d'autres cas, moins connus mais retentissants, comme la conversion d'Andrea, archevêque de Bari, quelques années avant Obadiah et dans la même région que lui. L'apostasie du christianisme entraîne le départ du converti, quand bien même, comme c'est le cas d'Obadiah, il n'exprimerait pas de rejet brutal de sa culture d'origine et du christianisme. De telles conversions paraissent scandaleuses aux chrétiens du temps, et l'hostilité du pouvoir politique à leur égard détermine largement leur déroulement. | ||
| 520 | |a Despite the tendency of Christian sources to "silence" conversions to Judaism, some of them are well documented, such as that of "Obadiah the Proselyte," a Norman nobleman born around 1070 in Southern Italy. I study here the stages of his conversion and the itinerary that led him from Italy to the Middle East. His conversion was marked by many signs and omens, starting with the adoption of a new name and his circumcision. There are other conversions, less well-known now but notorious at the time, such as that of Andrea, archbishop of Bari, a few years before that of Obadiah and in the same region. The apostasy of Christianity entailed the departure of the convert, even if, as is the case of Obadiah, he did not express a brutal rejection of his culture of origin and of Christianity. Such conversions seemed scandalous to Christians, and the hostility of the political power towards them largely determined what happened to the converts. | ||
