The argument will examine not the sources of the pastor's power, but various aspects of his intrinsic weaknesses. I shall suggest, above all, that we need to appreciate the extent to which priests' teaching was conditioned by awareness that only a limited range of Christian behaviour was susceptible to their command. A three-fold division of the process of becoming (and being) Christian maps the territory here demarcated. After the generalized process of conversion or "Christianization", an incremental process by which people identified themselves as Christian and does not necessarily involve any ecclesiastical authorities, and the formal procedure of Christian initiation involving an intense round of interactions between the pastor and his baptismal candidates, the principal theme of this paper will be those occasions when we find Christian preachers actually trying to effect change in specific audiences at particular times - when "conversion" assumes a concrete shape. | ||

Après le processus général de conversion, processus graduel par lequel les gens s'identifient eux-mêmes, sans nécessairement l'intervention des autorités ecclésiastiques, puis la procédure formelle de l'initiation chrétienne qui engage un jeu d'intenses interactions entre le pasteur et ses candidats au baptême, le thème principal de cet article sera ces occasions où l'on voit les prédicateurs chrétiens essayer effectivement d'opérer des changements chez des auditoires spécifiques à des moments spécifiques - quand la conversion prend une forme concrète. | ||
