Cette dynamique s'explique par le fait que les mobilisations ont été encadrées par les organisations politiques d'opposition préexistantes dans un contexte où le champ politique était déjà fortement polarisé autour des identités confessionnelles sunnite et chiite. Elle a été accentuée par l'émergence d'acteurs confessionnels sunnites qui, en miroir des dynamiques de communautarisation chiites, ont cherché à unir les sunnites derrière un leadership clérical et politique unique. Ces dynamiques de communautarisation confessionnelle où l'identité religieuse héritée en arrive à l'emporter sur les orientations idéologiques sont l'un des phénomènes sociaux et politiques marquants nés du « printemps arabe ». 
520 |a A specific feature of the 2011 protest in Bahrain was the sectarian aspect of both the mobilizations and their framing by some external actors. This is due to the massive presence among the protestors of preexisting opposition movements, which were acting in a deeply sectarian political field marked by the politicization of Sunni and Shia identities. The process by which the movement became more sectarian was reinforced by the emergence of Sunni actors who, replicating old Shia communalization dynamics, sought to organize the Sunni behind a single clerical and political leadership. This dynamic of communalization by which inherited religious identities prevail over ideology is a distinctive social and political phenomenon born from the "Arab Spring".
