Description
Summary:This article reveals the meaning of ἔννομος Χριστοῦ in 1 Corinthians 9:21, the only place in the New Testament where the phrase occurs. This article investigates the phrase in the context in which it is placed. First, this article explores ὑπὸ νόμον in 9:20 as the explicit couplet of ἔννομος Χριστοῦ. These phrases refer to the era. Taking Christ as the inaugurator of the new era into consideration, ἔννομος Χριστοῦ relates to the new era. Second, this article inspects the four uses of ἀνόμος collocated with ἔννομος Χριστοῦ in 9:21. Differently from the first, second, and fourth use of ἀνόμος, the third before ἔννομος Χριστοῦ, means ‘lawless’. Third, the article examines the components of the phrase: the preposition ἐν in ἔννομος, which refers to ‘under the influence or the power’; νόμος, for which ‘principle’ was one of the meanings in the period contemporary to Paul; and Χριστός, the anointed one. In particular, the genitive Χριστοῦ grammatically means ‘created by Christ’ as a producer genitive. Taken together, the phrase refers to ‘the principle (of the new era) created by Christ’. Lastly, the article surveys what the principle created by Christ means in the letter, that is, keeping step with the Spirit.
