In the course of the commemoration of the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968 and the celebration of his 90. birthday in 2019 he is remembered in manifold ways. But which Martin Luther King do we want to remember? The political activist or the theologian? An unthreatening "black Gandhi" who became an international icon with his "I have a dream"-speech? Or rather the radical, though non-violent activist for social and economic justice, who challenged the interrelated structures of racism, exploitation and war? Then, King's message and theology would become an inspiration and a challenge for us today! |
