The sixteenth century was the age in which a complex of collections of Canon law, inherited from the medieval period, imposed themselves as the essential basis of the Church law under the name of "Corpus iuris canonici"; at the same time it was the age in which the decrees of the Council of Trent became a text of primary referenee playing a central role in the juridical life of the Catholic Church. The essay seeks to highlight, on the one hand, the paths through which it was attempted to complete and update in accordance with the Tridentine "ius novissimum" the complex of these collections and on the other the results of these works; they constituted an important step towards the modern codification of the Canon law. |
