LOK |0 938   |l For scholar Leo Strauss, Jerusalem and Athens are the two roots of Western civilization, with Jerusalem representing biblical revelation and Athens representing philosophy. Before specifying the differences that constitute this fundamental tension, it is important to note an essential area of agreement between Athens and Jerusalem. Both traditions address with the utmost seriousness the question of the divine law. To understand these differences it is necessary to clarify the precise nature of the problem of divine law. Strauss approaches the issue by noting how all societies appear to operate with some notion of "custom" or "way" rooted in the observation "that things behave in a regular manner, that they have customs of behaving and ways of behaving."  |8 0
