Description
Summary:Until now the oldest manuscript of the Ethiopic Book of Enoch has been a late fifteenth century copy of Abbadianus 55 of Bibliothèque Nationale. Today, new manuscripts of Enoch keep turning up at a fast pace; and the number of manuscripts known in the West has more than doubled since half a century ago. Among these are two complete copies of the Book of Enoch which are much older than Abbadianus 55-K-9 (Kebrān 9/ Ṭānāsee 9), dated late fourteenth/ early fifteenth century and Ethiopian Monastic Microfilm Library (EMML) 2080 of the fifteenth century. On the basis of his examination and study of K-9, the writer has determined that it is the oldest and most reliable manuscript of Ethiopic Enoch available in the West today. Its many unique readings which often agree with those of the extant Greek fragments should help scholars not only to establish the original text of Ethiopic Enoch, but also to understand the nature of the recension of the Ethiopic Book of Enoch.
