Il en étudie les structures – d’ordre stylistique plus que sémiotique –, il interprète les actes de nomination inscrits dans le récit en s’appuyant sur une théorie du nom propre et du nom commun et restitue la signification ultime du texte dans sa situation de communication pragmatique définissable par le contexte historique de rédaction. Ainsi cette étude suit-elle le processus d’analyse que l’auteur propose en conclusion, enchaînant en quatre temps des étapes qui relèvent à la fois des méthodes historiques et sémiotiques : constitution du texte, examen de la syntaxe, étude sémantique, situation pragmatique.
