520 |a We live in a time when salvation seems to be an idea which is far removed from any contemporary reality. To envisage the Church of the future we must make sure that salvation, which is given in Christ and which the Church proclaims, is credible and accessible in people's lives. This requires a theological and pastoral work which begins with the experience of the suffering of the poor and by looking through the eyes of the poor. It is necessary for us to put ourselves in an attitude of listening, of obedience. The word 'listening' does not belong in usual theological discourse. Yet sin finds its origins specifically in a failure to listen. Listening to the words which God Himself speaks, which are inseparable from the actions He takes, is the gateway to a true understanding of salvation, which for the Church is the universal sacrament. The Church must be inspired and transformed by the life of the Spirit in the here and now.
