Summary: | The effort to imagine a future Church must inevitably face the limitation of being within a particular historical period, marked by the reception of Vatican II, which is a process very far from being concluded. The Second Vatican Council made it clear cannot be simply thought of as the restoration of a model belonging to past history such as that defined by the Council of Trent, but has to be based on a global regeneration, both able to go beyond the Eurocentrism that has marked the recent centuries of its history, and by leaping the rigid barrier between clergy and laity and involving the whole people of God in this process of transformation. Pope Francis' Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium has provided important ideas to start us thinking and launch this transformation process. This means radically rethinking the role of the local churches and recognising the value of inherited culture and traditions for far too long sacrificed by a vision of centralised uniformity. It is also necessary to encourage structures of synodal procedure as normal to encourage the participation of all the baptised in the taking of decisions that govern the lives of Christian communities. |
