Gerken had already recognized a remarkable consonance between the Christology of Bonaventure, the Seraphic Doctor and that innovative Christology of Teilhard de Chardin. Encouraged by this observation from such a discerning theologian as Gerken, the author of this article examines the points of refl ection on the Mystery of Christ taken by these two great thinkers, both men of action, refi ned poets and exceptional mystics. That aspect brought chiefl y to light is that of the cosmic dimension of the Lordship of Christ which both Bonaventure and Teilhard draw from the same New Testament texts. For Bonaventure, Christ is the origin of everything as Verbum Increatum (the uncreated Word), is at the centre of everything as Verbum Incarnatum (the incarnated Word) and leads everything to the reditus ad Patrem (return to the Father) as Verbum Inspiratum (the Inspired Word). Operating within a completely different cultural context, Teilhard expresses the same truth, but translates it into a language which makes it comprehensible and pertinent in the new vision of a Cosmos in evolution: for him too, Christ is the Alpha which is the origin of everything real, the Omega towards which everything is travelling, and he is also the only Centro which gives meaning and value to everything. Both sang the highest praises to the greatness of the Risen One, the unique light which shines on the restless heart of mankind from every age, leading to the right answers to that yearning for meaning.
