Was (und wo) ist Bet-Arbeel? Warum ist die Zerstörung von Bet-Arbeel durch Schalman hier als Beispiel ausgewählt worden? Wichtiger noch, was bedeutet der Text? Schalman wird mit Salmanasser III gleichgesetzt und Bet-Arbeel mit dem Tempel von Ishtar von Arba’il (Erbil). Es ergeben sich zwei mögliche Interpretationen: (1) Salmanassar III hat den Tempel der Ischtar geplündert, oder (2) Salmanassar III ist das Objekt des Satzes und der Tempel seiner eigenen Stadt wurde von jemandem anderen geplündert. Historisch ist beides möglich: die erste Möglichkeit (a), weil Salmanassars III Feldzüge in seinen späten Jahren nur wenig Beute ergaben, und (b), weil er Arba’il in diesen Jahren besucht hat; die zweite Möglichkeit lässt sich damit begründen, dass die Söhne Salmanassars III gegen ihren Vater rebelliert haben und Arba’il besetzten. Beide Interpretationen laufen auf dasselbe hinaus: der Text sagt voraus, dass die israelitische Armee gegen den König rebellieren und seine Festungen plündern wird. | ||
| 520 | |a Hosea 10:13b-14b reads: “…..because thou didst trust in thy way (according to some versions of the LXX chariots), in the multitude of thy mighty men; Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel.” This text raises some questions: Who is Shalman? What (and where) is Betharbel? Why was Shalman’s plundering of Beth-arbel singled out as an example? More importantly: what is the meaning of the text? It is argued that Shalman is to be identified with Shalmaneser III, and that Betharbel is the temple of Ishtar of Arba’il in the city of Arba’il (modern Arbīl). The text has two possible interpretations: (1) Shalmaneser III plundered the temple of Ishtar, and (2) Shalmaeser III is the object of the sentence and the temple in his own city was plundered by someone else. Historically, both interpretations are possible: the first because (a) Shalmaneser III’s military campaigns produced only little income in his late years and (b) he visited Arba’il in these years; the second because one of the sons of Shalmaeser III rebelled against his father and took possession of the city of Arba’il. Both interpretations lead to the same conclusion: the text predicts that the Israelite army will rebel against the king of Israel and will plunder his fortresses. | ||
