Итог: | Working within the discourses of material feminisms, disability studies, environmental ethics and religious studies, I analyse the letters between friends Carol Graham Chudley and Dorothy Field published in Between Gardens (1999) about gardening, friendship and disability. I translate the experiences of illness and/or disability in the human body, to that of illness and/or damage of the rest of the natural world. My central questions are: What kinds of stories can we tell from peripheral positions of embodiment and connection that recognise the realities of impairment and/or illness and/or brokenness? How can we tell such stories without falling back on a romantic ideal of 'cure' as a future goal that is held in opposition to our experience of the 'poor unfortunate' disabled body/damaged earth, which puts us in a distanced, paternalistic position? What are the spiritual implications of these material narratives with their potential for supplying strategies for environmental ethics? |
