After short introduction to Steinbeck’s East of Eden the twofold interrelation between the novel and Gen 4 are shown: On the one hand Steinbeck adopts the plot and the characters of the biblical story and varies its pattern, thus adapting it to modern times. On the other hand Gen 4:1-16 is explicitly included in the novel, as the passage is quoted and discussed. Gen 4:7bβ forms the key for an interpretation of East of Eden. This is an instructive example of the theological consequence of translating ambiguous Hebrew verb forms. Der erste Abschnitt skizziert knapp die exegetischen Probleme und Interpretationsspielräume von Gen 4,1-16. Nach einer Einführung in den Roman geht es um die zweifachen Bezüge zwischen Gen 4 und East of Eden: Steinbeck überführt die biblische Brudermordgeschichte in die Handlungsabläufe und Figuren des Romans, variiert und aktualisiert dabei biblische Vorgaben. Außerdem bezieht er Gen 4,1-16 explizit ein, indem die Stelle zitiert und diskutiert wird. Dabei bildet Gen 4,7bβ den Schlüssel zur Interpretation von East of Eden. Dies ist ein eindrückliches Beispiel für die theologische Tragweite der nicht eindeutig möglichen Übersetzung hebräischer Verbformen. |
