In the first story, David defends his seniority over Absalom. In the second, both Rehoboam and Jeroboam slight Jerusalem; Jeroboam, however, undermines Jerusalem’s special and unique role by establishing rival cultic centers; this provokes harsh criticism from the narrator. | ||
