The Syrian mission led by Alopen is well known. It is reasonable to assume, in the light of the sophistication and success of the Syrian mission, that Christianity must already have made some inroads into China before the Tang dynasty. How early? It is difficult to say. We cannot dismiss the possibility that some Christians did enter China during the Han dynasty as traders along the Silk Route. The iron cross found in Jiangxi province, and also referred to by Wang in his article, seems to be a reliable witness of the presence of Christianity in China well before the Tang dynasty. However, there is still no evidence that the church took root in China during the Eastern Han dynasty (25-220 C.E.). I have no doubt that much remains to be discovered. | ||
