| Summary: | Following the opinio communis the famous name of Israel shows so far only one single mention in hieroglyphic texts, within the so called Victory-Stela of Merenptah. The present author tries to show that there is possibly another source (ca. 200 years older) from the time of Amenhotep II. now in the Berlin Egyptian Museum which shows the names Ashqelon, Canaan and a fragmentary name possibly meaning “Israel”. Instead of some graphic and phonetic differences it seems reasonable to look for a basic significance of that name, which the author proposes to understand it as “a singing group of demonstrating personell” in a certain relation to the “Aschiru”-people in the letters of Tacanach. Nach vorherrschender Ansicht ist der bekannte Name „Israel“ bislang nur einmal in einer hieroglyphischen Quelle nachweisbar, nämlich in der sogenannten „Siegesstele des Pharao Merenptah“. Der Autor hat erstmals auf eine mögliche weitere Quelle, nämlich auf ein kurzes (etwa 200 Jahre älteres) Listenfragment aus der Zeit Amenhoteps II. aufmerksam gemacht, wo Israel in fragmentarischer Gestalt neben Aschkelon und Kanaan bezeugt zu sein scheint. Die Suche nach der originären Bedeutung des Namens führt zu dem Vorschlag, in der Schreibung trotz graphischer und phonetischer Probleme einen Hinweis auf die originäre Sinngebung „Israels“ im Sinne einer mit Gesang und Instrumenten agierenden Demonstrationsgruppe |
