Summary: | The 1983 Code of Canon Law, in line with the Second Vatican Council Decree Presbyterorum Ordinis, renewed the system whereby clergy receive support, shifting from a system of benefits to the potential afforded by the newly created diocesan funds (cf. c. 1274). Differences between members of the clergy in terms of remunerations, the possibility of dealing with this matter in accordance with standards of good government, and the preservation of the central role of the ecclesiastical office in the life of ministers (and the consequent support) stem from a system that is still in the initial stage of implementation. Local legislation has already been applied in many countries for a trial period. The general principles must be adapted to the particular circumstances of geographical regions or areas, as this is a field in which the principle of subsidiarity is especially relevant |
