According to the testimony of the New Testament, "leadership" however can be recognized neither as integrating, nor as dominating moment of the ecclesiastical office. Inquiry into the Old Testament may open perspectives on different allocations of function and on the reconfiguration of different official constellations. Especially the book of Deuteronomy, which distinguishes between office and leadership, could be helpful in this regard. In its framing sections, it tells about Moses's unfinished commission and the handing over of the leadership to Joshua. In its legal code, however, it has an own constitutional blueprint, institutionalizing those offices that have to guarantee the efficacy of the divine Word as imparted in the Torah. This article investigates the relationship between leadership and office in the Joshua-references of the book of Deuteronomy and in its structuring of the offices, conceived on a "brotherly" principle. In this, the priestly office receives especial attention. | ||
