The article scans a few recent texts which deal with various aspects of this "gift": its gratuitous nature (which Mauss had already studied, but which takes special significance in recent phenomenology); sacrifice (the only meaning of which, in our present culture, aims at the progress of the individual); recognition (the subject of Ricoeur's latest work in 2004). The original feature of any gift lies in the excess of its origin. It implies neither self-effacement nor self-imposition on the part of the giver: always present in his own gift, the giver rouses the recognition of the recipient whom he, the giver, has in the first place recognised and already respected.
