Summary: | The present research on Fr August Hlond (1881-1948) - the future primate of Poland - touches only briefly on his initial formation which took place in salesian houses in Italy, since the intention is to concentrate rather on his leadership role in the spread of salesian work in Central Europe: founder and rector of several houses and the first superior of the Austro-Hungarian province with its headquarters in Vienna. Attention is also given to his active role in guiding the provincial community, and also to his significant involvement in provincial and general Chapters. The connections between his patriotism and his fidelity to Don Bosco's charism are then considered. His abilities in the areas of formation, writing and research are briefly examined to complete the picture. The judgements of various superiors and some of his students provide further valuable insights into the contribution made by Hlond's activities to the Salesian Society and to that part of the Europe. This brief extract can certainly be of assistance in a re-evaluation in studies about him, of the importance of his salesian activity, unfortunately often ignored or undervalued. |
