Summary: | The economic crisis in Algeria is a crisis over control of economic rent and the activities of the "trabendo" economy, i.e. an informal economy originally based on smuggling and, over the past decade, sustained through violence which is legitimated by Islamist rhetoric. There is a close inter-relationship between the economic and the political crisis. As long as effective institutions under democratic control and the rule of law are not established, the exploitation of the economy through rent-seeking and violence will go on. (DÜI-Cls) |
