520 | |a The philosophical reflection on the human being’s personal individuality as developed by John Duns Scotus and Edmund Husserl is not only illustrated in this paper, but taken as a template for a critical assessment of the individualism dominating vast parts of Western societies. This kind of individualism is interpreted as an inauthentic way of the individuality’s self-realization. For both thinkers the individual is – as haecceitas respectively a monad – founded in a pristine reference to God and reaches its perfection in ethical love. Finally will be demonstrated that an individualism defined by demarcation and self-assertion is based upon a self-misunderstanding, which cannot be overcome by an appeal for more community or the return to religion, but only by a more profound search for the meaning of unicity and the risk of its realization.
