Durant les dernières années du XIX siècle, principalement en France, des laïcs et des prêtres, inquiets de l'écart grandissant entre les positions traditionnelles de la théologie et les avancées des différentes sciences, ont tenté de faire admettre par le magistère romain l'urgence d'une réforme afin d'assurer l'avenir de l'Église en modifiant son regard sur le monde moderne. Un évêque, Mgr Mignot, fut l'un des plus actifs, parmi les clercs, à tenter de faire comprendre au Saint-Siège qu'il fallait laisser le champ libre à la recherche et prendre en compte l'évolution des mentalités. Un autre prêtre, l'abbé Lucien Lacroix, fonda la Revue du clergé français pour mettre au service du clergé un outil d'information et de formation adapté à un apostolat en phase avec les aspirations du monde moderne. À Lyon, un groupe de catholiques libéraux et progressistes soutint l'hebdomadaire Demain fondé par un laïc, Pierre Jay, pour faire évoluer les mentalités catholiques hors du modèle intransigeant. Ces efforts furent condamnés par Pie X en septembre 1907, dans l'encyclique Pascendi dominici gregis, comme étant le « carrefour de toutes les hérésies ». Il s'ensuivit un climat délétère dans l'Église avec son lot de sanctions, de dénonciations. Surtout le soupçon de modernisme a pesé tout au long du XXe siècle sur toute initiative intellectuelle originale. Reprenant 13 articles parus dans différentes publications, ce livre offre un panorama original sur ce moment crucial de l'histoire récente de l'Église.
