Description
Summary:The analysis of a letter written at Fécamp shortly after the year 1000 enriches our knowledge of inter-monastic exchanges and cultural, technical and material transfers in the Middle Ages. In this document, the Prior of the Holy Trinity of Fecamp informs his colleague of Saint-Benigne of Dijon that their abbot, William of Volpiano, has asked him to send as soon as possible various provisions that he needs: fish, wax and other rare products in Burgundy. He then asked that the workmen in charge of completing the buildings begun at Fecamp should be sent from Dijon. Finally, he regretted that he could not immediately restore the books loaned by the monks of Saint-Benigne to those of Fecamp, for lack of a trusted person to ensure their transportation. This document, rich in information on the many forms of exchanges generated in context of reform, gives a concrete idea of movement of people and goods between the most closely associated communities of a network of fraternity.
