Ce dernier s’oppose au missionnaire et tente même de détourner de la foi le proconsul Sergius Paulus, pourtant désireux d’entendre le message de l’Évangile. La sanction réservée à Élymas sera sans pitié. Il deviendra aveugle après que Paul eut prononcé sur lui ce qui semble être une imprécation. L’une des questions soulevées par un tel récit est la suivante: quelle image de Dieu Ac 13,6-12 met-il sous les yeux du lecteur? Le Dieu de bonté et de miséricorde que Luc entend présenter dans les deux tomes de son oeuvre ne vient-il pas de tomber de son piédestal? Ici, ne rend-il pas un homme aveugle tout comme, précédemment, il avait puni de mort Ananias et Saphira (Ac 5,1-10) se refusant au partage communautaire des biens? S’inspirant largement des instruments de l’analyse narrative, cet article entend revisiter une scène où les enjeux théologiques et missionnaires sont bien présents. On verra que la cécité dont sera frappé le pseudoprophète n’est peut-être, en définitive, que la manifestation extérieure d’un «aveuglement» déjà bien présent dans le coeur et l’esprit du personnage. Situation désespérée et irréversible pour ce premier opposant qui croisera la route de Paul ? Rien n’est moins sûr, si tant est qu’on se souvienne que Saul de Tarse avait, lui aussi, été rendu aveugle pour un temps compté. 
520 |a Sent on a mission by the Church at Antioch (Acts 13), Paul had no sooner left the city than he was confronted by a strange character: the pseudo-prophet, Elymas. Elymas stood in opposition to the missionary and even tried to divert the proconsul Sergius Paulus from the faith, even though Sergius was eager to hear the message of the Gospel. The penalty inflicted upon Elymas was merciless. He became blind after Paul pronounced upon him what seems to have been a curse. One of the issues raised by such a narrative is this: What image of God does Acts 13:6-12 offer the reader? Has not the God of kindness and mercy that Luke tries to portray in both volumes of his work just tumbled from His pedestal? Is He not causing a man to become blind, just as He had punished Ananias and Sapphira with death (Acts 5:1-10) for declining to share their goods with the community? While broadly using the tools of narrative analysis, the present article aims at revisiting a scene where theological and missionary issues are at stake. It will appear at the end that the blindness that struck the pseudo-prophet might well have been but the outward manifestation of a “blindness” that was already at work in his mind and heart. Is this a desperate and irreversible situation for the first opponent that Paul encountered? Nothing is less certain, if indeed we remember that Saul of Tarsus had also been blinded for a counted time.
