Summary: | For seventy seven years, the al-Tamaddun al-Islami ("Islamic Civilisation") association has constituted one of the main centres of reformist thought in Syria. Born in reaction to the French colonisation, but committed to a dialogue that is at the same time open and critical with Western civilisation, it spreads its ideas through a journal which comes out between 1935 and 1981. Thereafter, the political context compels the association to confine itself to its charitable work. However, from the early 2000s on, a new generation of trustees has undertaken to reaffirm its intellectual mission. (Maghreb-Machrek/GIGA) |
