Missing from these conversations is how we might interpret Luke's resurrection and ascension in light of ancient spectacle culture and what impact these readings have upon the theology and soteriology of Luke-Acts. This paper argues that Luke shifts the reader's gaze from cross to ascension and in doing so firmly locates salvation in the ascension of Jesus, not his death or even resurrection. Comparisons with Greco-Roman understandings of benefaction and imperial apotheosis further highlight the unique locus of salvation in Luke's gospel. | ||
