| Summary: | This article - which can be considered a sequel to an earlier article published in Sacris Erudiri, 44 (2005) - studies the presence of quotations from the works of Saint Augustine in the Expositio super epistolam ad Romanos of William of St.-Thierry. It is argued that William’s commentary in general and its chapters on Rom. 5, 7-9, and 11 in particular abound with direct quotations from the African bishop’s works and that almost all of these quotations were simply copied from the Pauline commentary of the Carolingian scholar Florus of Lyon. These observations question some recent claims regarding the dependence of William’s Romans commentary on patristic sources (John Doutre, Steven R. Cartwright, Paul Verdeyen, Yves-Anselme Baudelet). |
