The areas of literary and redaction criticism have seen more and more complex approaches and a tendency to assume a late date. The traditional sources (J, E, D and P) often surrendered to models of redaction criticism, and no consensus is yet to be expected. For various reasons, a penchant towards synchronic analysis of the canonical, final textual form can be observed which comprehends the book of Genesis as an ingenious literary unit. In a way, the book functions as a test place for innovative methods influenced by literary sciences, models which differ from traditional literary criticism by treading different paths. There is a lack of consensus regarding methodology but on the whole, historical questions are being ignored and are considered of little consequence. There is room for improvement at this point. The present review allows the conclusion that the ideological confidence of traditional critical research has been shattered. Instead, a fresh pluralism has begun to enter (even in university theology) with a penchant towards more literary approaches and an increasing interest in the history of reception.
