Summary: | In response to the suggestion of John Paul II to encourage in Faculties of Canon Law an appropriate comparative study of both Codes present within the Catholic Church, announced during the presentation of the new "Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium" on 25th October 1990. The article offers a comparison of the first Canons in these respective Codes dealing with the Eucharist. The sources and the itinerary of the elaboration of Canons 897 CIC 83 and 698 CCEO, constituting the specific subject of the research, show the same faith of the Church in regard to the most blessed Sacrament, although sometimes expressed in different terms. Throughout history, there have been various emphases in western and eastern eucaristic Theology, expressed in the Sources and Canons examined, but the foundation is always the same: the tridentine teaching of the true, real and substantial presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist as reaffirmed by the documents of the Second Vatican Council. |
