Durant les années 1970, fortement influencés par la guerre du Vietnam et par le climat général de peur et d’inquiétude que provoquait la guerre froide, les historiens ont vivement critiqué le rôle joué par les Églises protestantes, en particulier entre 1914 et 1918, et un consensus s’est établi pour qualifier ce rôle de faillite morale et pour en faire le facteur déterminant de la laïcisation brutale de la société britannique au XXe siècle. L’article examine les origines et le développement de ce consensus, il montre pourquoi et comment il peut être remis en cause par un examen plus nuancé du rôle des Églises et de son héritage, avant d’ouvrir de nouvelles pistes pour la recherche à venir. | ||

During the 1970s, and heavily influenced by the Vietnam War and by the overarching fears and concerns of the Cold War era, historians were strongly critical of the role played by the Protestant churches in particular between 1914 and 1918, and a scholarly consensus emerged that portrayed their role as morally bankrupt and as a causal factor in the dramatic secularisation of British society during the twentieth century. This article examines the origins and development of this consensus, shows why and how it is being challenged by a more nuanced understanding of the churches’ role and its legacy, and concludes by indicating new directions for future research. | ||

Übereinstimmung bestand darin, diese Rolle als moralischen Bankrott zu qualifizieren und in ihr den entscheidenden Faktor für die brutale Laizisierung der britischen Gesellschaft im 20. Jahrhundert zu sehen. Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, wie es zu dieser übereinstimmenden Sicht kam, und zeigt, wie und weshalb sie mittels einer differenzierteren Prüfung der Rolle der Kirchen und ihres Erbes infrage gestellt werden kann, um anschließend der Forschung neue Pfade zu eröffnen. | ||
