Summary: | The common ideology of war in the Ancient Near East and in Israel usually glorifies the victories of the kings and the armies. If the king suffers a defeat, an explanation has to be given for that. The article discusses texts of the Ancient Near East and of the Old Testament which find the reason of a defeat in human guilt. It causes the abandonment and the wrath of the deities who have to be reconciled. |
