This article examines the archbishops’ management of monastic and canonical houses during these controversies. It argues that secular circumstances heavily shaped the episcopal administration of religious communities in such highly politicized times. Their interventions in monasteries and canonries could either intend compromise and reconciliation, discipline wayward clerics and monks, or display a genuine pastoral solicitude. Furthermore, a scrutiny of episcopal policies against the backdrop of the political situation, demonstrates that their vigorous action relied on secular support and failed to be effective without. | ||
