Es wird anhand einer Analyse der Apostelgeschichte sowie der Johannes- und Philippusakten argumentiert, dass eine soziolinguistische Fragestellung für die Altertumswissenschaften und die Bibelwissenschaft aufschlussreich sein kann und dass es bei der Analyse der Wortbedeutung und Wortwahl empfehlenswert ist, soziale Faktoren immer mitzuberücksichtigen. Eine soziolinguistische Analyse kann auch die narratologische, textpragmatische und textkritische Fragestellung erhellen. 
520 |a When an early Christian writer refers to Jesus as "the Lord", is it primarily a way of making a theological or political statement, or might social concerns have had more influence on the writer’s choice of words? This article summarizes Language and Identity in Ancient Narratives (Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2014), a research project that assesses the methodological implications of Variationist Sociolinguistics for the study of ancient texts. Based on analysis of the Acts of the Apostles, Acts of John, and Acts of Philip, it is argued that methodological improvements are needed in how lexical significance in ancient Greek texts is determined, and in particular that social factors such as addressee identity should regularly be taken into account. Illustrations are offered of how a sociolinguistic approach sheds light on the redaction and rewriting of ancient texts, how it informs the question of a work’s intended audience, and how it facilitates narratological analysis with regard to characterization, the social structure of the story world, and the construction of "Christian identities".
