Summary: | In light of recent debates about biblical hermeneutics in general and about the canonicity of the Old Testament in particular, this article offers, first, a critical re-reading of modern liberal positions, especially Schleiermacher and v. Harnack. The question under discussion is whether the Old Testament should be viewed as a document that, historically, precedes Christianity and that (therefore) lacks the unique spirit of Christianity that the New Testament (or at least certain parts thereof) conveys. The second part of the paper demonstrates that such a view does little justice to the ways in which the New Testament authors employ the Old Testament as a hermeneutical key. There is a clear sense that the life and death of Jesus of Nazareth are not self-explanatory but require scriptural interpretation and communal understanding. |
