The relationship between a council and the Petrine ministry can not only be seen from the side of fundamental theology. It is also relevant in a practical-theological way, so far as the Holy See with its organs is the protagonist in the middle of the complex reception process during a council. This applies especially to the II. Vatican Council with its redefinition of the pastoral mission of the contemporary church. Certainly it needs to be clarified what the papal authority consists of, where it is based on and what it refers to in every single case. For that purpose the article reflects on the intentions of John XXIII expressed in his famous metaphors, as well as on some selected post-conciliar documents. |
